Pilot Frederick Valentich, crossing Bass Strait after passing Cape Otway, radioed that an unidentified craft with four bright lights was orbiting his Cessna, ending transmission with it is hovering and it is not an aircraft, followed by metallic scraping sounds. Neither pilot nor plane was ever found.
